When Premier Danielle Smith announced the composition of her transition team, there were a number of recognizable names included on the list (read more about the team on page 5). In that announcement, she indicated that her Chief of Staff will be Marshall Smith. Prior to this new appointment, he had been serving as the Chief of Staff to the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions which he commenced in May 2019.

Smith also brings with him experience working as a ministerial assistant in British Columbia. He served as the Chief of Staff to the Minister responsible for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid in addition to a number of other roles. Following a personal battle with addiction and homelessness, Smith shifted his career focus to recovery initiatives. He spent time as the Executive Director for the Baldy Hughes Addiction Treatment Centre as well as President of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation prior to joining the Government of Alberta.

Smith will be tasked with and incredibly important role in Premier Danielle Smith’s administration. He and his team will be given a very short window to conduct a transition, complete the winter and spring sittings, and pass a budget before the election which is set for May 29th, 2023.
