Going into his third term as the MLA for Calgary-West, Mike Ellis is no stranger to the Alberta Legislature. He first was elected in a 2014 by-election as a member of the Progressive Conservatives under former Premier Jim Prentice and has won every election he has contested since. Prior to seeking public office, Ellis had served for a dozen years with the Calgary Police Service as a constable and patrol sergeant.

When the government changed in 2015, Ellis served in many critic positions for both the Progressive Conservatives and the United Conservatives, including Service Alberta, Justice and Solicitor General, and Children’s Services. He also served as the party whip in both opposition and government. He was first appointed to a cabinet role by Jason Kenney when he took on the position of Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

When Premier Danielle Smith had won the UCP leadership race in October 2022, she promoted Ellis by making him the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services. Here, he has been able to call upon his years of experience in policing to help inform his decision making. Following the 2023 election, he retained this position and was further promoted to Deputy Premier. This is a strong indicator of the trust he has earned in the Premier’s Office and the significant role he will play in the newly elected government.
