Earlier this month, United Conservative Party members from across the province congregated at the BMO Centre in Calgary for a record-setting annual general meeting. With registration reported to have surpassed 3,700 attendees, all eyes were focused on the governing party’s board elections that had a number of key vacancies to fill, including the president position.

After the ballots were counted, Rob Smith found himself to be the new head of the provincial board. He replaces Cynthia Moore who decided not to stand for re-election.

Most recently the president of the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills constituency association, Smith comes into the position at a critical time in the party’s existence. Although the party secured a second majority mandate, party leader Danielle Smith must face a mandatory leadership review sometime before the end of 2025 – a role the provincial board plays a critical role in organizing.

In his professional life, Smith is a former CEO of the Canadian Angus Association and once served as the general manager of the Olds Agricultural Society and Olds Regional Exhibition. He is also the co-owner of a cattle company. In his capacity as president of his local constituency association, he was one of the signatories that called for an early leadership review of former leader Jason Kenney.
