When Premier Danielle Smith won the provincial election on May 29th, a number of familiar faces found themselves back in the Premier’s Office to start the 31st Legislature. One of those individuals is a key piece of the team, Chief of Staff Marshall Smith. Prior to his appointment when Danielle Smith won the UCP leadership, he had been serving as the Chief of Staff to the former Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, a role he commenced in May 2019.

Marshall also brings with him experience working as a ministerial assistant in British Columbia. He served as the Chief of Staff to the Minister responsible for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid in addition to a number of other roles. Following a personal battle with addiction and homelessness, Smith shifted his career focus to recovery initiatives. He spent time as the Executive Director for the Baldy Hughes Addiction Treatment Centre as well as President of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation prior to joining the Government of Alberta.

While he was given a short runway to set Premier Smith up for success between the UCP leadership race and the provincial election, Smith will continue to be a key player in the Premier’s Office as the party prepares for its first full term with Danielle Smith at the helm.
