After a year serving as the interim CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS), Mauro Chies was officially appointed to the role on March 20th. A lifelong Albertan, Chies has extensive experience in healthcare with a career spanning nearly 35 years. He began his career as a laboratory technologist and has held several leadership positions, including several Vice President positions and Board Chair of Alberta Precision Laboratories.

In his video blog address to AHS employees, Chies emphasizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant degree of stress and burnout for AHS staff, a critical issue that he will focus on by restoring capacity in the organization, specifically noting rural areas.

Dr. John Cowell, the official administrator for AHS, says that Chies “brings a desire to drive innovation and change that will help employees and all Albertans experience a health care system that is more accessible, effective, efficient, and accountable — advanced by an organizational culture built on safety and trust.”

Chies education includes a master’s degree in business administration, a certification in medical laboratory science and general radiology and an honorary Bachelor of Technology degree from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Outside of work, Chies enjoys fitness, cooking and spending time with his family.
