Key Influencer - Naheed Nenshi - Leader of the Alberta NDP
After nearly ten years at the helm of the Alberta NDP, Rachel Notley’s successor has been elected. Naheed Nenshi was voted by members to lead the official opposition party on June 22, 2024.
Nenshi served three terms as the mayor of Calgary between 2010 and 2021, rising to national fame for his handling of the infamous 2013 floods in Alberta’s largest city. Prior to entering politics, he served as the president of the University of Calgary students’ union while completing his Bachelor of Commerce and later earned a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University.
He spent time working in the private sector including with McKinsey & Company prior to starting his own consulting firm. Additionally, he worked as an instructor at Mount Royal University teaching non-profit management. He has also instructed at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business.
In 2014, he was awarded the 2014 World Mayor Prize, an award designed to “discover, portray and honour exceptional mayors from all parts of the world.”
